Description
This inaugural educational program will bring together nationally recognized experts to provide an evidence-based update on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of cardiovascular disease in women. The symposium agenda features sessions spanning women's cardiovascular risk assessment, imaging, lipids, cardiometabolic health, and emerging prevention strategies. Expected attendees are cardiologists, primary care clinicians, advanced practice providers, fellows, and other healthcare professionals committed to improving cardiovascular outcomes for women.
Course Directors
Dr. Dastmalchi is a cardiologist at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular Institute, specializing in nutrition, cardiometabolic health and women's cardiovascular health. As part of the Women's Cardiovascular Program, she leads the Menopause program through Inova Health Systems.
Dr. Dastmalchi is passionate about women's cardiometabolic health, she has led an expert analysis emphasizing the importance of increasing clinical training in the menopausal life stage to help improve cardiovascular outcomes. Her dedication to nutrition across health care institutions and improving inpatient hospital menus has made her a leader in the nutrition space. She now co-directs a clinical elective for University of Virginia medical students in nutrition to help teach the next generation of physicians how to tailor nutrition in their clinical practice.
Her interest in cardiometabolic health has led her to win scholarship awards with the Cardiometabolic Health Congress and as a finalist for the American College of Cardiology Shark Tank Women's Health Research competition. Dr. Dastmalchi hopes to integrate her interests to improve cardiovascular outcomes in women through pivotal stages in their life.
Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, MASPC, FESC, FSCCT (hon) FIPC (hon) is a world-renowned cardiologist and recognized leader in womenβs cardiovascular health. She is a professor of cardiology at Houston Methodist and holds the Davis Chair in Womenβs Cardiovascular Health, was formerly at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, where she served as the director of cardiovascular prevention and associate director of the Barbra Streisand Womenβs Heart Center, and held the Anita Dann Friedman Endowed Chair in Womenβs Cardiovascular Medicine and Research.
Dr. Gulati is the Past President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and previously served as the inaugural Chief of Cardiology at the University of Arizona. She chaired the national chest pain guidelines from the AHA/ACC, served as editor-in-chief of CardioSmart, and is the author of the best-seller Saving Womenβs Hearts.
Her research includes the landmark St. James Women Take Heart Project, the Department of Defenseβfunded WARRIOR trial, and major roles in WISE and WHI. She has published in NEJM, Circulation, and JAMA and has been featured widely, including on Oprah.
Dr. Gulatiβs contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the National Red Dress Award, ACCβs Bernadine Healy Award, and the Arthur Agatston Award in Prevention.
Faculty
Alison L. Bailey, MD, FACC, FASPC, is Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Cardiology at West Virginia University. Her clinical practice focuses on cardiovascular disease prevention, women's cardiovascular health, and the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure. Throughout her career, Dr. Bailey has practiced in diverse clinical settings and has been committed to building programs and expanding access to cardiovascular care, particularly for underserved and rural communities.
She is passionate about medical education, improving cardiovascular health for all, and advocating for her patients and colleagues. Dr. Bailey currently serves as President-Elect of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology, is a member of the ACC HeartPAC Executive Committee, Editor-in-Chief of the American College of Cardiology's Extended Learning (ACCEL) editorial board, and Deputy Editor for JACC Advances.
Ty J. Gluckman, MD, FACC, FAHA, FASPC, is Medical Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Analytics, Research, and Data Science (CARDS) at Providence Heart Institute in Portland, Oregon, and an adjunct faculty member of the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at Johns Hopkins. His clinical interests focus on improving cardiovascular care through the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies.
Dr. Gluckman has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including JACC, Circulation, JAMA, and JAMA Cardiology. He serves as Associate Editor for Practice Guidelines and Clinical Documents for the American College of Cardiology and Chair of the ACC Solution Set Oversight Committee. He has also played a key role in developing several cardiovascular risk and clinical decision-support apps, including the ACC/AHA ASCVD Risk Estimator.
Michael C. Honigberg, MD, MPP, FACC, FAHA, is a cardiologist-investigator at Mass General Brigham and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He serves as Director of Research for the MGB Women's Heart Health Program and provides care through the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Center and Women's Heart Health Program.
His research focuses on women's cardiovascular health, particularly the impact of pregnancy and reproductive factors on cardiovascular disease, as well as clonal hematopoiesis, genomic aging, and precision prevention. His work is supported by the NIH, American Heart Association, PCORI, and industry collaborators.
Dr. Honigberg serves as Associate Editor of JACC and Chair of the American College of Cardiology's Cardiovascular Disease in Women Committee. He is a recipient of the ACC Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award and other national honors for his research.
Erin D. Michos, MD, MHS, FASPC, is Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, Director of Women's Cardiovascular Health, and Associate Director of Preventive Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. An internationally recognized expert in preventive cardiology and women's health, she has authored more than 700 publications and 11 book chapters. Her research focuses on women's cardiovascular health, lipids, cardiometabolic disease, obesity, coronary artery calcium, and cardiovascular risk assessment.
Dr. Michos previously served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology and is Co-Director of the IMPACT Center at Johns Hopkins. She is also a dedicated educator and mentor, having mentored more than 60 individuals and received multiple awards for her contributions to women's health, research, and mentorship.
Ann Marie Navar, MD, PhD, FASPC, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and a preventive cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Navar's research focuses on identifying and addressing gaps in the use of evidence-based therapies for cardiovascular disease prevention, particularly lowering cholesterol.
Her research includes utilizing EHR and administrative data for observational research as well as cardiovascular outcomes trials. Dr. Navar is the Deputy Editor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at JAMA Cardiology and is the Treasurer of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology.
Anum Saeed, MD, clinical and translational research is focused on the utilization of cutting-edge techniques, including lipidomic markers, for cardiovascular disease prevention and mechanisms implicated in linking cardiovascular diseases with neurocognitive decline and alterations in the Heart-Brain axis. Additionally, Dr. Saeed also investigates healthcare utilization and systems-based outcomes in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Dr. Saeed is a non-invasive cardiologist who specializes in general cardiology, cardiovascular disease prevention strategies, echo reading, and nuclear studies. She is also an American Board of Clinical Lipidology-certified lipidologist focused on the management of complex and inherited lipid disorders. Dr. Saeed serves on the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Leadership Council of the American College of Cardiology and the Genomic and Precision Medicine Committee of the American Heart Association.
Michael D. Shapiro, DO, MCR, FACC, FAHA, MASPC, is the Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University and Director of the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. His career has focused on lipids, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease prevention, and innovative lipid-lowering therapies, with research spanning translational science, epidemiology, and clinical trials. His pioneering work on PCSK9 physiology and therapeutics has established him as a leader in the field.
Dr. Shapiro is Immediate Past President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and Chair-Elect of the AHA Council on Lipidology, Lipoprotein, Metabolism, & Thrombosis. He is also Co-Director of the NIH T32 Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention and is recognized for his commitment to mentorship and education.
Leslee J. Shaw, PhD, FACC, MASNC, FAHA, MSCCT, is a leading outcomes researcher with a major focus on the clinical diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, including a particular emphasis on sex differences. As a leading expert in this field, Dr. Shaw provides valuable insights and research to improve patient outcomes. She is an endowed chair and tenured professor with appointments in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science, Population Health, and Cardiology. She is the Director of the Blavatnik Family Institute for Women's Health Research and vice chair for research for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science. In her roles, she leads women's health researchers across the Mount Sinai Health System, including multidisciplinary teams to tackle compelling research issues in women's health. In her previous position at Weill Cornell Medical College, she was the Director of the Dalio Institute. As well, at Emory University, she was the Director for the Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute, where she organized the conduct of more than 100 trials and registries annually within the Division of Cardiology.
Pam R. Taub, MD, FACC, FASPC, is a board-certified cardiologist and internationally recognized expert in cardiometabolic disease and women's cardiovascular health. She is Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego, Director of Preventive Cardiology, Founding Director of the Step Family Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, and leads the BEACON Center for Lipoprotein(a) Research.
Her clinical and research interests include preventive cardiology, lipidology, cardiometabolic health, and women's cardiovascular health. Dr. Taub is a federally funded researcher, experienced clinical trialist, and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications. She is a Fellow and former Board Member of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and a Fellow and former member of the ACC Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Leadership Council. She currently chairs the American Heart Association's Women in Cardiology Committee.
Kardie Tobb, DO, MS, CPE, FACC, FASPC, FACOI, is a board-certified non-invasive preventive cardiologist specializing in cardiometabolic disease prevention and women's cardiovascular health, with a particular focus on cardio-obstetrics. She is Medical Director and Founder of the Cone Health Heart and Vascular Cardio-Obstetrics/Women's Heart Health Program and serves as Clinical Integration Officer for the Cone Health Center for Equity.
Dr. Tobb's clinical and research interests include women's cardiovascular health, cardio-obstetrics, social drivers of health, and reducing disparities in access to care for medically underserved populations. She is a Board Member of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and is dedicated to improving cardiovascular health and outcomes for women and vulnerable communities.
Janet Wei, MD, is an Associate Professor of Cardiology and Biomedical Sciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She holds the Erika J. Glazer Chair in Women's Cardiovascular Research, Education and Innovation, and is Program Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, Co-Director of the Stress Echocardiography Lab, and Associate Medical Director of the Biomedical Imaging Research Institute. Dr. Wei completed her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, followed by advanced clinical and research training in women's heart disease as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 Trainee in the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Wei's clinical and research interests include cardiovascular disease in women, preventive cardiology, coronary vasomotor dysfunction, and advanced cardiac imaging. She is an investigator on several ongoing studies focusing on the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of patients with ischemia and no obstructive coronary arteries.
